Natural Wonders of Costa Rica & Panama

Discover the wonders of Panama & Costa Rica including a transit through the Panama Canal aboard Sea Cloud Spirit

  • 25 January 2021
  • Wildlife Tours/ Natural World
  • Red macaws

Let us take you to some of the loveliest and least developed places in Panama and Costa Rica whilst also including one of the greatest man made wonders of the world – the Panama Canal. An engineering marvel when it opened, the 50 mile passage still continues to astonish even the most veteran traveller.

When most people think of Panama and Costa Rica, they think of overland travel but not the hours which are usually spent traversing rugged roads in order to get around. There is an easier and more comfortable way to explore the region and that is under sail. Skip the arduous, lengthy land travel and relax instead aboard the magnificent Sea Cloud Spirit.

Sailing from the Caribbean Sea through the Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean, our cruise will take us along the coasts and to the islands of Panama and Costa Rica, areas of outstanding natural beauty and home to countless species of endangered birds from tiny hummingbirds to flashy macaws and parrots, toucans and woodpeckers. Add an amazingly rich biodiversity of flora and fauna seen against some of the lushest of landscapes to be found anywhere in the world and you have the recipe for a perfect winter escape.

However, what makes this trip stand out from any other is the opportunity to sail the shores of these remarkable countries under sail. To be in this beautiful part of the world is a reward in itself, but to be aboard such a marvellous vessel makes it perfect. To witness the New World as seen by the first explorers and later colonisers is a privilege and the sights, sounds and sheer energy of the crew as they man the sails will make for long lasting memories.

During these voyages we will venture into national parks and conservation areas teeming with wildlife and visit remote communities where locals live following ancient ways of life. There will also be opportuities to enjoy swimming and nature walks. A flexible itinerary and knowledgeable onboard team will enable us to make the most of each day, whether we are landing on remote beaches by Zodiac, watching out for wildlife or learning more of the history and culture of the places we are visiting. We will explore ashore in small groups and enjoy a convivial atmosphere onboard. As always with a cruise aboard a Sea Cloud vessel we have included plenty of time at sea. After all, travelling under sail is an important aspect of this unusual trip. If you have been contemplating a visit to Central America, then this unique journey aboard Sea Cloud Spirit is the perfect opportunity.

  • Introducing Sea Cloud Spirit

Many of our regular travellers will be familiar with the magnificent sailing ship Sea Cloud II which we charter each year. We are now delighted to have confirmed some exclusive charters of her new sister vessel, Sea Cloud Spirit, which is due to be launched in 2020. To build a fully rigged three-master in the 21st century might seem a little unusual but Sea Cloud Cruises are committed to their true passion for sailing. It is indeed gratifying to know that in this age when new cruise ships of ever increasing gigantism roll out of the yards and where the sole object of the owners is to increase size and maximise revenue, that a few owners with vision and style still exist.

The creation of something as beautiful as Sea Cloud Spirit is a great credit to her owners. The challenge was to preserve the romance of a windjammer, whilst adding extras to emphasise the high degree of comfort and exclusivity and to take advantage of some of the great technological strides made in recent times. However, a prime objective was not to lose that all important romance of sail and end up with sails which are controlled by computers. Besides a sail area of 44,100 square feet which is set by hand, she is equipped with two economic diesel-electric drives that reliably keep her on course even during calms. Our association with Sea Cloud Cruises dates back almost thirty years and during this time they have proven to be a company of the most exacting standards. Not only do they operate the most exquisite vessels, they do so in a fitting style offering the very best of intelligent service and superb cuisine. Whilst there are many large sailing ships offering passages around the world there are few, if any, that can compare in terms of luxury to the three Sea Cloud vessels.

Standing on the dock and looking up at the vessels you cannot help but be impressed by their sheer majesty. Walk up the gangway and on to the deck and it is even more impressive. And, the splendour does not end here; below deck is a sumptuous world of traditional maritime influences with 21st century luxuries. Well-appointed cabins and public areas create a restful atmosphere totally in keeping with the overall grandeur of the vessels. Even the most jaded of travellers cannot help but be enthralled by the experience and indeed many past travellers return time and time again.

Over lunch we sail the short distance to Tortuga Island which is home to angelfish, morays and needlefish.

Day 4 Manuel Antonio National Park.

From our berth in Quepos we travel to the Manuel Antonio National Park which is one of the most stunning and bio-diverse areas of the world. Spread out over 683 hectares it is filled with diverse wildlife, has both primary and secondary forests, boasts a stunning shoreline ideal for bird watching or swimming and is home to a number of endemic species of plants and animals. We will make an early start this morning to get the best viewing of monkeys, vividly coloured birds and the lethargic three-toed sloth.

Day 5 Corcovado National Park.

Resting on the northern side of the Osa Peninsula, Drake Bay (Bahía Drake) is our gateway to the Corcovado National Park. We will land on one of the beaches before enjoying a walk through the primary and secondary forest with our naturalist guides locating and explaining the extensive rainforest wildlife and flora. The rich biological diversity of the biological corridor of Corcovado National Park is astounding, and sightings may include as many as four types of monkeys, as well as coatis, sloths, anteaters and much more. Due to the open space, it is often easy to spot a number of tropical birds here including toucans. This afternoon we sail to Golfito where we will clear immigration as we leave Costa Rica and have the rest of the day at sea.

Day 7 Chiriqui Gulf Marine Park, Panama.

Arrive into Panama and the Chiriqui Gulf Marine Park which spreads over 36,000 acres and comprises of 25 islands and numerous coral reefs. Created in 1994 the Marine Park’s aim is to aid the preservation of the region’s ecosystems, diverse flora and fauna, scientific conservation projects and protect the islands endangered inhabitants. We will land on one of the islands where you may choose to take a nature walk to mangroves learning about the local flora and fauna or find a spot under a palm tree on the beach and take a swim. Return to the ship for lunch and an afternoon at sea.

Day 8 At Sea.

Today we hope to experience a day under sail aboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

Day 9 Archipelago Las Perlas.

Spend the afternoon exploring this archipelago of islands named after the large pearls found in the waters. Native Indians inhabited these islands until the 16th century when the Spanish discovered the pearls and Isla Contadora became a centre for their transit to Spain. With over 200 islands, the majority of which are uninhabited, we will find ourselves a spot to relax on the beach or swim in the clear waters with schools of tropical fish.

Day 10 Panama City.

Panama City is a combination of the historic old town, declared a UNESCO Historical Site, and the ultra-modern new town. Following breakfast, we head out to stroll along the cobblestone streets of the Casco Viejo visiting the colonial mansions and 17th century churches and convents before continuing to Panama Viejo and the original ruins of the city founded in 1517 which was burnt to the ground by British pirate Henry Morgan. This afternoon is free to relax on board or visit the Miraflores Locks Visitor Centre where a number of exhibitions tell us about the history of the canal and its construction and where we can watch the ships as they pass through.

Day 11 Panama Canal Transit.

An undisputed destination on the travel bucket list has to be the Panama Canal. The first attempt to build the canal was made by a French company but ended in failure in 1889. The American government eventually bought out the French for 40 million dollars, and their attempt to build the Canal started in 1904. Through the efforts of over 80,000 workers and the loss of more than 30,000 lives, the greatest single construction project ever undertaken was completed. The project ended in triumph, with the Canal opening in 1914, and it is now a vital artery of international trade, with nearly 14,000 ships travelling through it every year. The canal is around 50 miles long and takes between eight to ten hours to cross.

Day 12 San Blas Islands.

Spend the morning at the stunning San Blas archipelago. The archipelago is made up of over 400 islands which line the north coast of Panama with white sandy beaches set in a turquoise sea. The islands are home to the indigenous Kuna Indians who gained self-rule from the government of Panama in the 1920s and maintain their traditional way of life including the production of colourful fabric art known as ‘molas’. We will have time to take a nature walk or maybe enjoy a swim from the beach. After lunch on board we have an afternoon at sea.

Day 13 Colon to London.

Disembark this morning and transfer to Panama City for our scheduled indirect flight to London.

Introducing Sea Cloud Spirit

This small Maya settlement was buried under volcanic ash when the Laguna Caldera Volcano erupted in AD 595. From here we continue on to San Andrés where in 1977 a step pyramid and a large courtyard with a subterranean section were unearthed. Experts believe that it was inhabited by up to 12,000 Maya between AD 600 and AD 900. After lunch in a local restaurant we will spend some time in the city of Santa Ana, including a visit of the theatre, before making our way to Copan for our two night stay at the Hotel Marina (or similar). Dinner tonight will be served in the hotel restaurant.

      Day 4 Copan.

After breakfast we will make the short journey to the archaeological site of Copan. Copan is unique among Mayan ruins because its structures are built with volcanic stone rather than limestone. Since the former is more weather resistant over time, Copan still has many of its original artistic carvings while other Mayan cities do not. Spend a morning in this fascinating park before returning to the hotel for lunch. This afternoon is at leisure to relax in the hotel or explore Copan, a beautiful place paved with cobblestones and lined with white adobe buildings with red-tiled roofs. Dinner tonight will be served in the hotel restaurant.

Day 5 Route of the Flowers, El Savador.

Depart from the hotel after breakfast and visit the Mayan ruins of Tazumal, considered the most important and well preserved in El Salvador. We will then make our way slowly along the Ruta de las Flores (Route of the Flowers), a beautiful, colourful and cultural journey that will take us through small colonial towns in the most mountainous region of El Salvador and aptly named for the abundance of flowers to be seen along the way. Before lunch, we will have time to visit Concepcion de Ataco, a bright and historically significant city of the region, following which we will transfer to the Hotel Mision de Angeles for our overnight stay. Dinner tonight will be in the hotel restaurant.

Day 6 Cerro Verde National Park.

Cerro Verde National Park is a must see on a visit to El Salvador. Nestled between three volcanoes this park features a lush forest teeming with flowers, flora and fauna as well as some of the most stunning views in the country. Cerro Verde is an inactive volcano located at an altitude of 2035 metres and boasts 500 hectares of nature, it has a cloud forest in and around the crater with a temperature of between 12 and 18 degrees centigrade. Enjoy a tour of the area and from here you will enjoy panoramic views of Izalco Volcano better known as the “Lighthouse of the Pacific” because the boats were oriented with the red glow of the lava to reach the Acajutla port and the Santa Ana Volcano, the largest of the three volcanoes. Transfer to San Salvador for lunch in a local restaurant and then check in to the Hotel Sheraton Presidente or similar for an overnight stay. Remainder of the day is at leisure before dinner tonight in the hotel.

Check out of our hotel and transfer to San Salvador airport for our scheduled indirect flight to London.
