Opera in Venice

A four night stay in Venice at the Duodo Palace Hotel including two musical performances

  • 20 October 2020
  • Music
  • Santa Maria della Salute Church

Venice is a wonderful place no matter when you visit but October is without doubt one of the most enjoyable months, the summer crowds have departed and the operas, sights and special atmosphere can be enjoyed in relative tranquility. This beautiful city is unique and casts its spell over all those who visit and our tour offers the opportunity to discover Venice for the first time, or to rediscover the Venice previously visited. Venice enjoyed a long period of prosperity and stability, which funded the grand palaces, fine churches, sculptures and paintings, and we will see the display of wealth as we explore the city and learn about its history which is virtually inseparable from the history of opera itself.

We have included tickets for evening performances of Rossini’s ‘The Barber of Seville’ at Teatro La Fenice and Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto’ at the impressive Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto where each act is performed in a different room. In addition, we will enjoy a guided tour of the city’s musical venues, an excursion to visit some of the beautiful islands and a full day at leisure to explore at your own pace. For our stay we will be based at the charming Duodo Palace Hotel which is ideally located in the centre of Venice and only a short stroll from the main attractions. We hope you can join us for this new and exclusive tour which is limited to just 25 guests.

Day 1 London to Venice, Italy.

Fly by scheduled flight. Arrive this afternoon and transfer by motor launch to the Duodo Palace Hotel for our four night stay. Settle into your room before meeting for dinner in a local restaurant this evening. (D)

Day 2 Musical Venice.

After breakfast we take a walking tour to some of the most significant musical venues in the city. A short walk from the hotel brings us to the Marciana Chapel, home to the famous choir of the Basilica of San Marco. Continue on to the Church of the Pietà, a former convent and orphanage for girls and an authentic masterpiece of the 18th century by Giorgio Massari. The young orphans that stayed here were encouraged to study music and their most famous teacher was Antonio Vivaldi, hired in 1703 as a violin and viola teacher as well as a choirmaster. Also see the Church of San Giovanni in Bragora, a delightful Baroque church where Vivaldi was christened, and the beautiful Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti, where he conducted the choir for many years. The remainder of the day is free to explore at your own pace before we meet for an early dinner near the hotel. This evening enjoy a performance of ‘The Barber of Seville’ at the Teatro La Fenice. (B,D)

The Barber of Seville – Gioachino Rossini

Set in Seville, at the end of the 18th century, the happy barber Figaro helps Count Almaviva court Rosina. Rosina is not indifferent to the serenades of her mysterious lover, but she is jealously guarded by Dr. Bartolo, her guardian, who, with the help of his sinister friend Don Basilio, intends to marry her as soon as possible. How to foil the old man’s plan? Figaro has many ideas. However, the first attempt fails, and Count Almaviva, disguised as “Lindoro”, a penniless student, cannot enter Bartolo’s house. The second attempt is almost successful, and after a series of secret notes, various disguises and cases of mistaken identity, love triumphs and Rosina and Count Almaviva are finally married.

Day 3 Murano, Burano & Torcello.

Today we will take a private motor launch visiting some of the most beautiful islands of the lagoon where we can explore some fascinating aspects of Venice that are quickly disappearing. We will pass many of the 40 picturesque islands that surround the Venetian Lagoon visiting Murano, renowned since 1291 for its glass manufacture and where we will witness masters of this delicate craft at work during a visit to a leading factory. Continue to Burano, a tiny island dotted with brightly painted houses. Its fame is due to traditional lace making, an art still practiced by many of the local women. Here we will have some free time for lunch. Our last call will be in Torcello where we can walk the paths of the nature reserve and see the spectacular Byzantine mosaics in the seventh-century Cathedral of Santa Maria Dell'Assunta. We will then return to Venice and this evening meet for dinner in a local restaurant. (B, D)

Day 4 Venice.

You will have a full day to explore Venice independently. Maybe visit one of the fascinating museums, cross the Rialto Bridge or visit St Mark’s Square. We meet this evening for dinner before a short walk brings us to the Musica a Palazzo, where we will enjoy a performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto. Each act is performed in a different room of one of the most noble and fascinating palaces in Venice, the Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto. (B,D)

Rigoletto – Giuseppe Verdi

Rigoletto is considered by many to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi's middle-to-late career. Its tragic story revolves around the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto and Rigoletto's beautiful daughter Gilda. The opera's original title, La maledizione (The Curse), refers to the curse placed on both the Duke and Rigoletto by a courtier whose daughter had been seduced by the Duke with Rigoletto's encouragement. The curse comes to fruition when Gilda likewise falls in love with the Duke and eventually sacrifices her life to save him from the assassins hired by her father. Despite serious initial problems with the Austrian censors who had control over northern Italian theatres at the time, the opera had a triumphant premiere at La Fenice in Venice on 11 March 1851.

Day 5 Venice to London.

After breakfast transfer to the airport for our return scheduled direct flight to London.
