Cruising the Mighty Volga

A cultural journey through the heartland of Russia, from Moscow to Volgograd aboard the MS Volga Dream

  • 30 June 2021
  • History and Culture
  • St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow’s Red Square

Our associates at Volga Dream Cruises have made some cabins available to us for this wonderful voyage which provides the opportunity to travel along ‘the main street of Russia’, an apt title for the mighty Volga River as she snakes her way from Moscow through the Russian heartland to Volgograd. Along the way we will encounter the many ethnic peoples of the Central Volga, learn something of their cultures and enjoy the ever-changing landscapes of countryside and city, of towns and villages. Pass small hamlets of wooden houses, fabulous Kremlins, glorious cathedrals and, in stark contrast, some vast industrial complexes.

The journey will begin with a two night stay in Moscow, Mother Russia’s first city, and from here we will board our luxurious floating hotel, the MS Volga Dream, which will transport us through the vast lands of the Tatars to Volgograd, formerly known as Stalingrad. We will visit fascinating places such as ancient Nizhniy Novgorod and some of the cities of the Golden Ring before finally ending in Volgograd, where some of the fiercest fighting on the eastern front during the Second World War took place.

It is a fascinating time to undertake such a journey, to witness the turning point of economic development in an area which sees few tourists and is very much the motor of the Russian economy. Such a trip by any other means than a river vessel would be difficult to comprehend and to add even further to our experience we will be joined by local guides who will provide much insight into Russian history and politics.

Volga Dream

The vast network of Russian waterways is served by numerous standard class vessels, however for our journeys along the Volga we are fortunate to be using the deluxe MS Volga Dream for our journeys along the mighty river. The elegant MS Volga Dream entered service during the spring of 2007 and was rebuilt from a 200 passenger vessel to accommodate just 100 passengers in an intimate setting. Itinerary

  • St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow’s Red Square
  • Radishchev Art Museum, Saratov

Day 1 London to Moscow, Russia.

Fly by scheduled flight to Moscow. On arrival transfer to the Moscow Marriott Grand Hotel (or similar) for a two night stay. Meet your fellow guests this evening for a welcome drink and enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Day 2 Moscow.

Our day will begin with an orientation tour of the city. Visit magnificent Red Square and its famous landmarks including Lenin’s Tomb and St Basil’s Cathedral and drive by the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, one of Russia’s most important cathedrals that was completely destroyed during Stalin’s rule and restored in 1990. Continue on to the famous Novodevichy Cemetery where many noted Russian authors, musicians, playwrights and poets are buried along with famous actors, political leaders, and scientists. After lunch in a local restaurant we will visit the Tretyakov Gallery to view its extraordinary collection of Russian art, ranging from 12th century icons to 20th century masterpieces. Finally, we will explore Moscow’s Metro, famed for its architectural splendour, before returning to the hotel for dinner.

Day 3 Moscow.

After breakfast at the hotel, check out and continue our exploration of Moscow with a visit to the world-famous Kremlin and its Armoury Museum, consisting of Tsarist thrones, ceremonial crowns, coaches and gifts of state. We will then visit the magnificently frescoed 15th century Assumption and Archangel Cathedrals before arriving at the MS Volga Dream where we will embark. Enjoy lunch on board as we begin our sailing along the Volga River. This evening we will be formally introduced to the crew at the Captain’s welcome reception and dinner.

Day 4 Uglich.

We will arrive this morning into Uglich, a city that dates back to the 10th century. Our walking tour of this Golden Ring city will include the Chapel of Dmitry, a 17th century treasure built on the site where Ivan the Terrible’s 10-year old son met his death. We will also visit the Church of the Transfiguration, noted for its beautiful iconostasis, and attend a choral music concert.

Day 5 Yaroslavl.

This morning visit the oldest city on the Volga River, Yaroslavl, a World Heritage Site. In the Spassky Monastery see the Transfiguration of the Saviour, adorned with murals depicting St John’s apocalyptic visions before visiting the richly frescoed Church of St Elijah the Prophet. Enjoy a costumed reception at the Governor’s House before re-boarding the MS Volga Dream for lunch and sailing on to our next port of call.

Day 6 Nizhniy Novgorod.

Formerly named Gorky and once a wealthy commercial centre poised on the trade routes to the East, Nizhniy Novgorod became a closed city due to the military activity involved there during the Soviet era. We will learn much of the city’s history, including how it became a place of exile for political prisoners. We will also have the opportunity to walk the ramparts of the 16th century Kremlin with its spectacular views and to visit a number of the city’s elaborately painted churches. This evening we will be treated to a concert from a local children’s folk group.

Day 7 Kazan.

As we approach the Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Orthodox Churches no longer dominate the riverbanks, being instead replaced by the occasional Muslim mosque, all beautifully adorned and with their own unique character. In the afternoon, we will disembark from the vessel to explore Kazan, the centre of Tatar culture in Russia. Here, we will visit the white-walled Kazan Kremlin where the famous mosque, Kul-Sharif, neighbours the old Peter and Paul Cathedral. Later today we will enjoy a concert by a local Tatar folk group.

Day 8 Samara.

Relax on the vessel’s Sun Deck and admire the serenity and beauty of the Zhigulevskie Mountains as we approach the city of Samara. On arrival into Samara, we will depart on a city tour including a visit to its space museum, and the fascinating Samara Art Museum.

Day 9 Saratov.

Once home to a large German community, today Saratov is known for its connection to Russia’s first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin, who lived and studied here. During our guided city tour we will visit the Radishchev State Art Museum, which was the first Russian picture gallery outside of St Petersburg and Moscow. Return to the vessel for dinner and continue sailing.

Day 10 Volgograd.

Formerly known as Tsaritsyn and then Stalingrad, the name-changes of this remarkable city mirror its turbulent and tumultuous past. Being the site of epic battles during the Russian Revolution, it was known as Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961. It is of course acknowledged for its heroic defence by the Russian people during World War II, this being the grounds of the most decisive battles on the eastern front. We will visit the memorial on Mamayev Hill, where some of the bloodiest fighting transpired and also spend time at the Stalingrad Battle Panorama Museum.

Day 11 Volgograd to London.

After breakfast aboard our vessel, disembark and transfer to the airport for the return indirect scheduled flight to London.

  • Cathedral of the Assumption, Yaroslavl
  • Kul Sharif Mosque, Kazan
  • St Basil’s Cathedral, Red Square, Moscow

The ship’s Captain and crew will do their utmost to find the best and safest solution. Any changes to the day’s schedule will be communicated as soon as possible.

    PAYMENT

The currency on board is the Russian Rouble and Visa, MasterCard and American Express cards are accepted on board the ship. An itemised bill will be presented to each passenger prior to their disembarkation for any items purchased during the cruise.

    POST

The vessel’s gift shop has postcards and stamps for you to purchase (subject to availability), and items can be posted on your behalf by the ship’s crew (although as they are unable to do so at every port of call, this could take longer than if you were to post yourself). Please note that neither the ship nor Noble Caledonia can be held responsible for items of post that are not successfully delivered on your behalf.

    QUESTIONNAIRES

A questionnaire will be provided to all passengers towards the end of their sailing. We would be grateful for you to complete and return this.

    RECEPTION

Reception is manned between the hours of 07:00 and 23:00 daily. A member of the crew can be contacted at all times by telephone.

    ROOM SERVICE

    Room service is available.

    SAFE

All cabins are fitted with a safe and we recommend you place your valuables inside the safe whenever you are away from your room. Please remember to remove all items from your safe prior to you departing the vessel at the end of the cruise.

    SAFETY

Please take careful note of all safety instructions provided to you by the Master and crew of the vessel. Full safety instructions are available to you in your cabin.

    SAUNA

A sauna is available for use on board the vessel. Please contact the ship’s reception to make an appointment.

    SMOKING

Smoking within your cabin or any of the vessel’s public areas is strictly prohibited. Designated smoking areas are provided and can be advised by the ship’s reception upon embarkation.

    SUN DECK

The ship has a Sun Deck which is available for guests to enjoy. There may be times, for example at periods of inclement weather or low bridges, whereby it is necessary to close the Sun Deck. Please listen carefully to the Captain and crew for instruction. Please also note that the Sun Deck and its steps may become slippery if the weather is cool or dew forms.

    TELEPHONE

Should you wish to make an internal call please dial the corresponding cabin number. If you are wishing to make an external call, please contact the reception desk.

    VISITORS

Visitors are not permitted aboard the vessel, however with the prior consent of the ship’s reception, this can sometimes be possible. Please provide as much notice as possible to the senior staff so that the necessary arrangements can be made. The ship’s operators reserve the right to deny boarding to any visitors.

    WATER

Complimentary water is available during breakfast, lunch and dinner. Bottled water is replenished daily in your cabin.

    WI-FI

Wi-Fi is included in the holiday price, but please note that services can be erratic and cannot be guaranteed, especially outside of the main city areas.

    PLEASE NOTE

The above information is accurate and correct to the best of our knowledge at the time of publishing. Noble Caledonia accepts no responsibility for any errors or omissions and none of the facilities or features of the vessel described herein which are not specifically described in our advertisements and on your holiday invoice as being included in your holiday price will be deemed to be included in your holiday package.
