A voyage from Valletta to Split aboard the MS Monet
Join us aboard the charming 50-passenger MS Monet and discover some of the wonders of the Mediterranean and Adriatic as we sail to some of the most beautiful places in the region. The combined effect of the natural beauty, intriguing history and stunning architecture of the towns and cities we will visit during our journey from Valletta to Split makes for a fascinating voyage.
Setting sail from Valletta, our itinerary includes a rich collection of archaeological, historical and scenic sites in Italy including the ancient Sicilian city of Syracuse in Sicily. We continue to Crotone, once one of the most important Greek settlements of Magna Graecia, and inland to the Medieval hilltop town of Santa Severina, where a Norman castle and Byzantine treasures await. We will then spend two days discovering some of Puglia’s gems including the Baroque splendour of Lecce, the historic streets of Otranto and the enchanting trulli of Alberobello. Sailing across the Adriatic to Montenegro, a highlight for many will be our arrival into Kotor, a 14th century walled fortress town fronted by a sublime bay and surrounded by limestone cliffs. Our final days will be spent in Croatia where we will visit the delightful islands of Korcula and Brac before our voyage ends in the historic city of Split.
Our guided trips ashore will be a pleasure as we explore in small groups with our excellent local guides and we have also included ample time at leisure enabling you to soak up the atmosphere at your own pace. From ancient Greek cities and Roman monuments to Medieval fortresses, Baroque towns and idyllic Adriatic islands, this is not an itinerary that a large cruise ship could operate but one which is ideal for the 50-passenger MS Monet.
We are delighted to have chartered the MS Monet, a 220 foot motor yacht accommodating a maximum of 50 guests. Originally built in 1970, MS Monet was converted and launched as a passenger ship in 1998, fully renovated in 2016 and upgraded again in 2018. If you find large resort style vessels accommodating many thousands of passengers attractive then of course this isn’t the vessel for you. However, if you prefer an informal and warm atmosphere more akin to a private yacht combined with an itinerary dedicated to both discovery and relaxation then you need look no further.
Fly by scheduled flight. On arrival transfer to the MS Monet and embark. Enjoy welcome drinks and dinner as we sail this evening.
Syracuse was founded by the Greeks in 734 BC and by the 5th century was a political and military power throughout the Mediterranean, rivalling Athens as the largest and most beautiful city in the Greek world. This morning there will be a choice of excursions including a visit to the Neapolis Archaeological Park to discover the well-preserved Greek theatre with seats carved from limestone. Paradise Quarry, now an attractive garden and orange grove, was the primary source of that limestone and is the site of the curious ‘Ear of Dionysius’, a vast grotto with an amplifying resonance. Alternatively, drive to Noto, a picturesque city built in 1703 located on the terraced slopes of Mount Iblei. A guided walk along the central streets will reveal the 18th century Palazzo Ducezio and some of the Baroque churches. After lunch on board we have an afternoon at leisure to explore independently before we sail this evening.
After a morning at sea, we arrive in Calabria and the port of Crotone which is on the site of the ancient Greek City of Kroton. Whilst little remains of the Greek city it was one of the most important settlements of Magna Graecia. We will take a scenic drive inland this afternoon to Santa Severina, one of Italy’s prettiest towns overlooking the Neto River valley. We will explore the majestic Carafa Castle, which was built by the Normans in 1076 and is surrounded by strong, crenellated walls with a moat on three sides. The castle contains intricate underground labyrinths and stables, with the remains of Medieval frescoes. Also see the cathedral, the beautiful Byzantine baptistery and enjoy some time to wander the town’s tangled streets. On our return to the ship, we will stop at a local farmhouse for a tasting of typical Calabrian food and wine.
From our berth in Otranto we will drive to Lecce, often referred to as ‘the Florence of the South’ with its impressive collection of Baroque architecture. A guided walk will include a visit to the beautifully decorated Santa Croce Basilica and Piazza Duomo, considered one of the finest and most impressive squares in southern Italy. We return to the ship for lunch and a leisurely afternoon to explore Otranto independently, perhaps walk the winding streets or along the seaside promenade or alternatively you may choose to relax on the local beach before we sail tonight.
This morning visit the Puglian countryside which is scattered with ‘trulli’, limestone dwellings built with dome or conical roofs. We will enjoy a pleasant walk in Alberobello, a fairy-tale trulli town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and see St Anthony Church also built in trullo style. Alternatively, enjoy a morning at leisure in Monopoli where you can wander through the historic centre, visit the cathedral or see the Castello di Carlo V. Return to the ship for lunch and an afternoon at sea.
Over breakfast we enter the Gulf of Kotor and sail up the fjord-like entrance to the Medieval town and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor. This really is an extraordinary place full of marvellous architecture and pretty town squares. This morning there will be a choice of tours, with the option to join a walking tour of Kotor which will include the 12th century Cathedral of St Tryphon, the ancient town gates, the Maritime Museum and Romanesque churches including St Luke’s. Alternatively, depart from Kotor by boat, crossing the Bay of Kotor to the island of Our Lady of the Rocks, one of Montenegro’s most treasured landmarks. Upon arrival, a guided visit will introduce the island’s fascinating history, legends, and beautifully preserved church and museum collection. We will rejoin the boat to continue along the scenic coastline to the charming village of Prcanj, where we explore the historic Franciscan Monastery, long associated with the area’s seafaring traditions and maritime heritage. Our tour ends with a musical performance inside the monastery. Return to the ship for lunch and enjoy the afternoon to explore at your own pace.
Spend the day on the island of Korcula, the reputed birthplace of the explorer Marco Polo. A morning guided tour will include a walk along Korcula’s crooked Medieval streets revealing elegant squares flanked with palaces of the old nobility. After lunch on board the afternoon is free to explore the area further at your own pace or maybe visit one of the nearby beaches.
From our berth in Sibenik we visit the majestic waterfalls of Krka National Park. Enjoy a guided walk along wooden walkways and across bridges through this unique, fjord-like landscape with its multiple waterfalls and rich flora and fauna. Alternatively, explore the historic town including the Cathedral of St James, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old city walls and the theatre. Return to the ship for lunch and enjoy the afternoon at leisure.
Arrive this morning on the island of Brac and the attractive port of Pucisca located at the end of a long bay. Brac is world renowned for the quality of its stone, which was used for the Diocletian’s Palace in Split as well as the White House in Washington and other parliament buildings in Europe. Spend a few hours in the charming small town, voted one of the prettiest in Europe, where the buildings’ white roofs create a distinctive atmosphere. Later we sail to Split where our guided walk includes the Diocletian’s Palace, built by the emperor in AD 295-305 as his retirement villa. Much of this large building is well preserved and the palace contains Split’s old town within its walls, making it the only Roman palace that has been continuously inhabited since Roman times.
Disembark this morning and transfer to the airport for our scheduled flight to London.
