Day 3 Urumqi.

This morning we travel by coach to Turpan where we explore the Ancient City of Gaochang, an ancient Silk Road outpost that once served as a vital trading hub. After lunch, we marvel at the Karez irrigation system, an engineering marvel that has provided water to this arid region for centuries. We then visit Jiaohe Ruins, an ancient city carved from rock, whose unique architecture reflects the ingenuity of its former inhabitants. Later this evening, we board the Golden Eagle Silk Road Express for our first night onboard. Settle into your cabin, explore your private train and enjoy a sumptuous Welcome Dinner prepared by our Head Chef.

Day 4 Kashgar.

After a relaxed breakfast on board, we disembark to explore Xiangfei Park, a tranquil oasis steeped in legend and natural beauty. Known as the “Fragrant Concubine’s Garden,” the park is filled with ancient trees, serene ponds, and shaded walkways, offering a peaceful introduction to the cultural heritage of the region. For lunch, we are treated to a traditional Muqam banquet, an experience that goes far beyond dining. We then continue our journey to Kashgar Old City, one of the most evocative and historically significant cities along the ancient Silk Road, where history feels wonderfully alive. Wandering through its labyrinth of narrow alleyways, we encounter traditional mud-brick homes, artisans at work, and scenes of everyday life that have changed little over generations. This immersive experience offers a rare window into the customs, craftsmanship, and enduring spirit of the local community.

Day 5 Kuqa.

Set along the ancient Silk Road, Kuqa reveals a rich tapestry of cultural influences shaped by centuries of exchange between East and West. Our first stop is the remarkable Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves, one of the oldest and most important Buddhist cave complexes in China. Carved into dramatic cliffs overlooking the Muzat River, these caves date back as early as the 3rd century and house an extraordinary collection of murals. This afternoon, we visit Rastan Old Street, a vibrant area where local culture continues to thrive. Here, we take part in a special naan-making experience, learning the techniques behind this staple Uyghur bread. As we sip fragrant tea and sample local accompaniments, we gain a deeper appreciation for the customs, warmth, and enduring traditions that define this historic Silk Road community.

Day 6 Golmud.

Today is devoted to an extraordinary adventure from Golmud into the remote and otherworldly landscapes of Dahaidao, often referred to as the “no man’s land.” Travelling by off-road vehicle, we venture deep into this vast and rarely visited expanse, where wind-sculpted rock formations, silent deserts, and endless horizons create a dramatic and almost surreal environment. Along the way, striking Yardang landforms, naturally carved by centuries of wind erosion, rise from the desert floor, forming an ever-changing gallery of shapes and shadows.

Day 7 Xining.

Our day in Xining begins with a visit to the Tibetan Culture Museum, where we gain a deeper understanding of the region’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage. Thoughtfully curated exhibits showcase traditional Tibetan art, religious artefacts, and everyday objects, offering insight into the customs, beliefs, and enduring traditions of life on the plateau. We then enjoy lunch in a local restaurant, sampling regional flavours before returning to the train. This afternoon, we continue our journey in comfort as we travel towards Dunhuang, watching the vast landscapes gradually unfold beyond the window.

Day 8 Dunhuang.

Arriving in Dunhuang, we explore the Mogao Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its ancient Buddhist art. This “Cave of a Thousand Buddhas” is a spiritual oasis that has inspired pilgrims and artists for centuries, adorned with vibrant murals and statues that date back over a thousand years. Local folk artists serenade us with music, adding an atmospheric touch to our journey through this sacred complex. After lunch, we explore the striking landscapes of Mingsha Mountain, where vast “singing” sand dunes shift and shimmer in the desert light. At their base lies Crescent Spring, a serene oasis whose delicate, crescent shape offers a captivating contrast to the surrounding sands, before reboarding our train for dinner.

Day 9 On Board the Golden Eagle Silk Road Express & Xi’an.

In the evening we arrive into Xi’an, where we will check into our hotel for a one-night stay.

Day 10 Xi’an.

Step into the pages of history with a morning visit to the world-renowned Terracotta Warriors. Discovered by farmers in 1974, this vast subterranean army, over 6,000 intricately detailed, life-sized soldiers, horses, and chariots, was created to protect China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, in the afterlife. Wander through the immense excavation pits and marvel at the individuality of each figure, from the folds of their armour to the expressions etched on their faces. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the nearby Bronze Chariots and Horses Museum, where exquisitely preserved ceremonial chariots reveal the sophistication of ancient imperial engineering. As evening falls, enjoy a specially arranged banquet within the museum, an atmospheric dining experience surrounded by remarkable relics of China’s past.

Day 11 Xi’an.

This morning, explore Xi’an’s ancient city walls, one of the oldest, largest, and best-preserved defensive structures in the world. Stroll along the ramparts where imperial guards once stood watch and take in panoramic views of the old town—a captivating blend of ancient tradition and modern life. Rejoin our train this afternoon and continue onwards towards our final destination, Beijing.

Day 12 Beijing.

Upon arrival in China’s capital city, we enjoy a visit to the Temple of Heaven Park, an expansive and harmonious complex where emperors once performed sacred rituals to ensure good harvests. As we stroll through its tranquil grounds, we admire the elegant Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and observe locals practising tai chi, calligraphy, and music, offering a glimpse into everyday Beijing life. This afternoon, we explore the magnificent Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City. Once the imperial residence of Ming and Qing dynasty emperors, this vast and meticulously preserved complex reveals a world of grand halls, intricate architecture, and priceless treasures, bringing centuries of imperial history vividly to life. After the touring program concludes, you will be transferred to the prestigious Four Seasons Hotel Beijing for a two-night stay.

Notification of cancellation will be effective when it is received by us at our offices. Since we incur costs in cancelling your holiday, you will have to pay the applicable cancellation charges up to the maximum shown below (although please note the exceptions outlined in Part 6(c) below):

Period before the day of departure within which cancellation notification is received by us Amount of cancellation fee as % of total holiday price payable*
90 days or more 10%*†
70 to 89 days 40%*
61 to 69 days 60%*
60 days or fewer 100%*

* Plus any additional amendment charges or cancellation charges for upgraded and/or connecting travel arrangements or other additional extras (see part 3(d) of these Booking Conditions).

The cancellation charges set out above have been calculated as a genuine pre-estimate of the losses we would incur in the event you cancel your holiday within the stipulated time period, taking into account the charges we will incur from our suppliers (some of which may be up to 100%) and our expected cost savings and income from alternative deployment of the travel services that comprise your holiday package. We will deduct your cancellation charges from the monies that you have already paid to us and will reimburse any remaining monies within 14 days of our receipt of your cancellation notification. Where your cancellation charges exceed the value of the monies that you have already paid to us, we will contact you for the payment of the remainder, which shall be due within 14 days of our receipt of your cancellation notification.
