Here is a special invitation to join us at one of England’s grandest country estates, Grade I listed Wolterton Hall, a magnificent 18th century Palladian Hall set amidst 500 acres of naturalistic parkland. Built between 1727 and 1742 by Horatio Walpole, brother of Britain’s first prime minister Sir Robert Walpole, the house which was unoccupied for almost thirty years has been returned to its original Georgian splendour. There is accommodation for 50 guests either staying in the Main House, East Wing or in numerous charming cottages located adjacent to the house. For our exploration of North Norfolk’s grand houses and enchanting gardens we will have the exclusive use of the property for six days and our stay will include two performances by London Festival Opera in the elegant Saloon.
Norfolk in bloom during the month of June is something to behold. From our ideal location in North Norfolk we have planned a leisurely itinerary that will include the gardens at Mannington Hall purchased by Lord Walpole of Wolterton in 1736. Particularly famous for its Heritage Rose Garden with some specimens dating back to the 15th century, this is a glorious garden and of particular note are the Knot and Sensory gardens. Moving to the west of Wolterton we will visit another great one time Walpole home, Houghton Hall. Surrounded by 1000 acres of parkland this impressive Palladian mansion houses a fine collection of original art and furniture and the surrounding gardens won Christie’s and the Historic Houses Association ‘Garden of the Year Award’. Close by, is the private residence of four generations of the Royal Family, the Sandringham Estate. Our morning here will include a tour of the ground floor rooms of the house, the décor, furniture and furnishings are almost exactly as they were during the Edwardian period. Included with our visit will be a guided tour of the 60 acres of stunning gardens.
We will also visit the moated Hindringham Hall and its wonderfully romantic garden, and nearby Thorpland Hall with its delightful six-acre gardens. Our itinerary will finish on a high note with a visit to East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens, an endlessly beautiful garden of 32 acres in an exposed prairie landscape by the North Norfolk coast.
Wolterton Hall
On a recent visit to Wolterton Hall I was totally captivated by what previous owners and the current owner have created in restoring this grand building to its former glory. No shortcuts have been taken; everything has been orchestrated with taste and in sympathy with the original designs. It struck me that this would be a wonderful place to stay for an insightful tour of North Norfolk. The state rooms are exquisite: the Saloon with its well-preserved tapestries gifted to Horatio Walpole, Britain’s ambassador to France by Cardinal Fleury for brokering peace between the two nations; the State Dining Room with the vast Amigoni family portrait; the Venetian Room with its golden silk fabric walls and the elegant library.
The 12 bedrooms on the second and third floors, with a State Bedroom on the first floor, are supremely comfortable and would grace any palace. All bedrooms have luxurious en-suite bathrooms with spacious walk-in showers and many also benefit from a free-standing bathtub. The bedrooms have accommodated many famous guests including Admiral Lord Nelson, the godchild of Horatio Walpole. Nelson was a frequent guest and had his own bedroom which has been restored and houses a Georgian galleon model and hand painted panorama.
The East Wing of the house has also been beautifully restored in Regency style. Inspired by the Georgian period the two en-suite bedrooms have sweeping views over the lake and include a separate drawing room painted in a warm and vibrant yellow. The remaining bedrooms are in nearby houses and have all been renovated to the highest of standards with private bathrooms and some with private walled gardens. The Stable Block is currently undergoing a complete refurbishment. In all my years in the travel business I have rarely been so impressed as here at Wolterton, it is an absolute gem.

Itinerary
Day 1 Wolterton, Norfolk.
A transfer to Wolterton Hall from Norwich or King’s Lynn railway stations will be provided for those arriving by train. There is ample parking in the front of the house for those travelling by car. We will meet this evening for welcome drinks and dinner.
Day 2 Wolterton Hall & Mannington Estate.
Today will be taken at a leisurely pace. After breakfast we have the morning to explore Wolterton Hall and its seven-acre walled garden, one of the largest in East Anglia. Where once brambles ruled there is now a garden of fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs together with a newly created small vineyard. After lunch in the Hall we will make our way to Mannington Hall’s remarkable garden. Here, in this tranquil setting are formal and wild garden areas, particularly pleasing are the wildflowers around the lake and ruined church. After some refreshments enjoy a walk across the estate or ride back to Wolterton where this evening there will be a performance by London Festival Opera followed by dinner.
Day 3 Sandringham Estate & Houghton Hall.
This will be a busier day as we visit the great estates of Sandringham and Houghton. At both places there will be tours of the house and garden. Highlights at Sandringham include the eight ground floor rooms which house some of the treasured collections of Meissen and Minton, as well as the 60 acres of formal gardens including the North End Garden originally created by Geoffrey Jellicoe in 1947 for King George VI. After lunch at a local restaurant we will continue to nearby Houghton Hall with its domed corner towers, one of the finest Palladian style houses in England. Built for Sir Robert Walpole between 1722 and 1735, we will see the sumptuous Stone Hall, Marble Parlour, Cabinet Room and Salon, all lavishly endowed with fine paintings, statuary and elegant furniture. The award winning five acre Walled Garden with its spectacular double-sided herbaceous border and formal rose parterre offers some peace and tranquillity in a marvellous setting.
Day 4 Hindringham Hall & Thorpland Hall.
Today we will visit privately owned Hindringham Hall, an amazingly attractive manor house with its Medieval moat, fishponds, walled garden and formal and informal borders wrapped around a brick and flint Tudor Hall. A guided tour of the ground floor rooms of the hall by its owner will cover the history of the house over the last 500 years, whilst a tour of the garden will include the fishponds which were built some 900 years ago and the bridge over the moat dating back to 1538. After lunch at Hindringham, a short drive will bring us to Thorpland Hall, another privately owned Tudor Hall with a six-acre garden which should be at its very best in June. Return to Wolterton later this afternoon and this evening we will meet for dinner.
Day 5 The Old Vicarage Garden, East Ruston.
After breakfast we drive to one of East Anglia’s finest gardens for a private visit. The Old Vicarage Garden spans some 32 acres with many garden rooms with herbaceous borders, sub-tropical gardens, gravel gardens, a sunken rose garden, a Dutch garden, Mediterranean garden, Desert Wash and large woodland garden. After lunch we will drive back to Wolterton Hall for a leisurely afternoon enjoying all the estate has to offer. There will be an early evening performance by London Festival Opera followed by our farewell gala dinner.
Day 6 Wolterton.
Depart after breakfast. Transfers will be provided to Norwich and King’s Lynn railway stations for those returning home by train.
