Uganda - Bwaise Safe Water Project
The slum area of Bwaise, in Kampala suffers from the lack of a proper water supply, lack of safe water for human consumption, lack of proper latrines, poor drainage system and poor sanitation. This put children in a vulnerable state and a high risk of weakening their immune system at AFFCAD School and the neighbouring community where many children were suffering from water borne diseases.
This is an area that Noble Caledonia guests visit during a tour of the slums in Kampala run by Action for Fundamental Change and Development (AFFCAD), a youth led nonprofit organization transforming living conditions in Kampala’s poorest slum areas by empowering the children, youth and young women through education, health, and economic empowerment programs.
The Noble Caledonia Charitable Trust supported this project initiated by AFFCAD to provide safe water for children living in the Bwaise slum. The project was implemented at AFFCAD SCHOOL site which included the construction of a well, installation of a purified drinking water tank, creation of a water station for children to access water and installation of a 10,000 litre water tank to harvest rain water to supply the school and surrounding community with safe water to reduce the risks of water borne diseases. The project has faced numerous challenges, including flooding, restricted access, solid rock and coronavirus, but the well has finally been completed and is now operational.
The Safe Water in Bwaise slum project has provided safe water to more than 100 young children living and schooling in Bwaise slum and over 200 households in the same. The project promoted and raised awareness on hygiene and sanitation in Bwaise slum and reduced instances of the outbreak of water borne diseases.
Awareness signposts promoting water, sanitation and hygiene were installed around the school to aid visual teaching of pupils, care takers and the community on water safety, hygiene and sanitation and these have helped promote water and sanitation around the community through creating awareness.
The community around AFFCAD School lacked a free clean and accessible water source and this initiative was welcomed by the community members who were very appreciative of the new well.
