Mozambique Relief for Conflict Victims |
Those who have cruised with us on our Indian Ocean cruises over the past 30 years will have enjoyed Mozambique’s untamed, white sand beaches and clear blue waters teaming with wildlife. However, sadly this northern region of Mozambique has become home to a conflict which has caused a great deal of suffering which has mostly gone unnoticed by the rest of the world.
Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique has a population of 2.3 million. It has historically been a neglected region and cholera and malaria are endemic. The rates of child malnutrition are the highest in the country and there is little access of HIV and tuberculosis care.

Since 2017, Cabo Delgado has been the home of a forgotten conflict, which has lately deteriorated into violent clashes. According to the UN, over 670,000 have been so far displaced by the violence and entire towns have been burned and pillaged, notably in Mocimboa da Praia and Macomia.
Médecins Sans Frontières is supporting those who have fled the violence. In Pemba and Metuge there are approximately 100,000 internally displaced people trying to survive. MSF have launched several mobile medical teams and have conducted thousands of medical consultations. Teams of specialists in logistics, water and sanitation are also building latrines and providing drinking water, with health promotion teams providing public health information.

As the conflict deepens, MSF will continue its life-saving work and provide essential medical and humanitarian care to those suffering in Cabo Delgado.
To help the people of a region that has given us so much enjoyment, the NCCT have donated £5,000 to MSF to support the help they are giving to a great many people suffering from violence, displacement, and hunger.
