Beyond the sun, sea and sand for which Malta is so well known lies an enchanting archipelago with an extraordinary history and fabulous sites waiting to be discovered. Our new, carefully planned escorted tour has been designed to fully appreciate the 7000 years of captivating history as we visit palaces and cathedrals, wander along cobbled streets and soak up the timeless atmosphere. Though one of Europe’s smallest countries, Malta’s superb strategic position in the heart of the Mediterranean has ensured a rich and eventful past. Over the centuries it has been coveted, fought over and settled by many from the Phoenicians and Arabs to the Knights of St John, the French under Napoleon, and the British, each having made their mark.
For our week in Malta, we have chosen to stay at the five-star Malta Marriott Resort & Spa, ideally situated close to the beautiful seafront promenade of Sliema. We have planned the week to include one full day and several half days at leisure providing the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy the hotel’s many facilities, including the inviting swimming pools and wonderful spa. During our included guided tours, we will visit Malta’s World Heritage Listed capital of Valletta which, surrounded by water and centuries-old bastion walls, has a unique and enduring charm. On a walking tour we will discover the atmospheric streets of Mdina, Malta’s former capital, renowned for its fascinating blend of architectural styles and will also dedicate a full day to the tranquil island of Gozo. Our final days will be spent visiting the prehistoric site of Ghar Dalam Cave, the splendid 18th-century Palazzo Parisio, and the Three Cities: Birgu, Senglea, and Bormla, each steeped in history and celebrated for their important role in the story of the Order of St John.
Whether you are visiting Malta for the first time or returning to rediscover its treasures, this is the perfect opportunity to explore the islands in greater depth, and to do so at a wonderfully peaceful time of year, free from the bustle of summer crowds and the heat of high season.

Itinerary
Day 1 London to Valletta, Malta.
Fly by scheduled flight. On arrival transfer to the Malta Marriott Resort in Balluta Bay, our base for the next seven nights. After settling into our rooms we meet for dinner tonight. (D)
Day 2 Valletta.
This morning we drive the short distance into Valletta where we visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens, offering breathtaking views of the Grand Harbour and across to the Three Cities. Our walking tour continues to St John’s Co-Cathedral, richly adorned by the Knights of St John and home to Caravaggio’s masterpieces “The Beheading of St John the Baptist” and “St Jerome”. Next, we explore the historic Grand Master’s Palace, a symbol of knightly power for over 450 years, followed by a private visit to Misterium Fidei, the cloistered convent in Valletta. Here we will gain a unique insight into the socio-cultural traditions that are intrinsically woven into the Maltese identity, where the church and everyday life remain deeply interconnected. We will take lunch in one of the city’s restaurants and, after some free time to explore Valletta independently, transfer back to the hotel. (B, L)
Day 3 Mdina & Dingli Cliffs.
Today we travel to the western part of Malta as we visit the early Christian St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat. We then continue to the Medieval fortified town of Mdina, Malta’s former capital. During our walking tour we will discover various architectural styles, including Sicilian-Norman palaces and impressive Baroque buildings of great historical significance. At the Domus Romana, an ancient Roman townhouse, we can view the remarkably preserved mosaics and artefacts that provide insight into the daily life of Malta during the Roman period. After a light lunch, we continue to the Dingli Cliffs for a short walk and the opportunity to admire Malta’s highest cliffs and breathtaking views. (B, L)
Day 4 Gozo.
Today is dedicated to the nearby island of Gozo, thought to be the Calypso Isles of Homer’s Odyssey. We will take the ferry from Cirkewwa Port to Mgarr Harbour from where we drive to the Ggantija Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s oldest free-standing monuments. Afterwards take a scenic drive along the northwest coast, including photo stops at the Wied il-Mielah Window and the traditional Salt Pans before we arrive at the Basilica of Ta’ Pinu, Malta’s national shrine. After lunch we head to the capital, Victoria, which lies beneath the Citadel, the walled fortress dominating the island. Walk within the city walls and view the imposing cathedral before we return to the port and our ferry to Malta. (B, L)
Day 5 At Leisure.
Spend the day at leisure to relax at the hotel and enjoy the facilities. Alternatively, you may wish to return to Valletta or explore other parts of Malta under your own arrangements. We will meet for dinner tonight. (B, D)
Day 6 Ghar Dalam & Palazzo Parisio.
After breakfast we will visit the Ghar Dalam Cave and Museum, one of Malta’s most important prehistoric sites. The cave is renowned for its rich fossil deposits, including remains of animals that lived on the island over 500,000 years ago, and provides valuable insight into the earliest human presence in Malta. Afterwards, drive to Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar, which is often referred to as the “miniature Versailles of Malta”. This 18th century palace is celebrated for its lavish interiors, intricate stucco work, gilded ceilings, and elegant ballrooms. Our visit will also include a tour of the palace’s ornate gardens, beautifully landscaped with fountains, statues, and fragrant orange trees. Lunch will be served in the gardens before returning to the hotel. (B, L)
Day 7 Three Cities.
After a leisurely morning we will depart in the early afternoon for a tour of Malta’s historic Three Cities — Vittoriosa (Birgu), Senglea, and Cospicua. These fortified towns played a central role in the history of the Order of St John and are renowned for their narrow streets, imposing bastions, and architectural treasures. The tour begins in Vittoriosa, with a stop to view the Church of St Lawrence before we board a traditional Maltese boat (dghajsa), offering unique views of Valletta and the Three Cities from the water. We conclude with dinner at a traditional Maltese restaurant, where you can experience authentic local cuisine in a charming setting. (B, D)
