We are delighted to have exclusively chartered the 60-passenger AmaMagdalena in order to offer this unique exploration of Northern Colombia’s Magdalena River including the remote villages and abundant wildlife of this fascinating region. We have combined the seven night river cruise with some time in the capital city of Bogotá. Colombia combines dazzling natural wealth with captivating culture, and with its rich biodiversity, one would be hard pressed to find a country which offers such staggering and stimulating variety. With guided excursions encompassing historic walking tours, live music, birdwatching and boat tours, we will ensure your days are full of discovery as you immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage along the Magdalena River.

Our journey begins with a two night stay in Bogotá before we fly to Barranquilla to embark the newly launched 60-passenger AmaMagdalena and experience the exciting performances at the colourful Carnaval before setting sail. The Magdalena River provides a rich ecological system and with the help of the expert guides, we will explore the unique flora and fauna and hope to spot a variety of birds including toucans, eagles, quails and tinamou. Along the way we will visit local villages, discover the traditional town of Santa Barbara de Pinto and the stunning colonial architecture of Mompox before we arrive in the beautiful city of Cartagena with its colourful colonial quarter, where pastel reds and yellows blend magically with the blues of the Caribbean.

    Itinerary

    • Cartagena
    • San Felipe Castle, Cartagena

Day 1 London to Bogotá, Colombia.

Fly by scheduled indirect flight to Bogotá and upon arrival transfer to our hotel for a two night stay. The afternoon will be at leisure to relax before meeting your fellow travellers for dinner at the hotel this evening. (D)

Day 2 Bogota & Monserrate Hilltop Convent.

After breakfast, enjoy a morning guided walking tour to La Candelaria Historic district of Bogota. Plaza Bolivar (Main Square) is surrounded by several important Colonial and Republican style buildings including the Palace of Justice and the Colombian Congress. Our tour will also include a visit to Botero Gallery and the Gold Museum. After lunch in a local restaurant you can enjoy the afternoon at leisure to relax or explore further independently. We will meet in the early evening for a cable car ride to Monserrate Hilltop Covent from where the panoramic views will enable you to see the different parts of Bogota. This evening dinner will be served in a local restaurant atop the beautiful Monserrate Mountain. (B, L, D)

    Day 3 Bogotá to Barranquilla.

This morning we visit the wonderful Bogotá Botanical Garden to discover the many native flowers and plants. Follow pathways around the garden to exhibits showcasing the plants, the rose garden and the Andean Forest. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before we fly to Barranquilla and embark the AmaMagdalena for our seven night journey along the Magdalena River. In the evening, there will be a special Carnaval celebration during which you can enjoy this authentic experience as you learn the Carnaval’s motto: ‘Quien lo vive, es quien lo goza’ (‘Those who live it are those who enjoy it’). Widely considered one of Colombia’s most important folkloric celebrations, the Carnaval of Barranquilla has also been declared a UNESCO Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. (B, L, D)

    Day 4 Sitio Nuevo.

Today, we visit a local village along the river and during our time there we will learn more about the lives of the local people. There will be time to enjoy the traditional crafts and art that are on display and taste the local delicacies as we learn about the region’s unique culture. (B, L, D)

Day 5 Magangue Region to Mompox.

Experience the vibrant sounds and sights of Colombian nature during an excursion by small boat and discover the wild beauty of Boca de Tacaloa (the mouth of Tacaloa) – a striking natural wonder surrounded by rich landscapes, local legend and untamed energy in the Magangué region. During our guided nature tour, we will hopefully encounter fascinating species, including beautiful birds that are unique to this region of the country. Later we will enjoy scenic cruising enroute to the remote island town of Mompox where we will be welcomed by the local musicians with an exclusive jazz performance. (B, L, D)

    Day 6 Mompox.

Marooned on a freshwater island, the town of Mompox embodies the appearance of what many villages looked like during colonial times and its many beautiful colonial buildings have been well preserved. Founded in 1540, Mompox became an important Spanish trading post and was at the time considered a haven for keeping gold and other treasure protected from the pirates that pillaged coastal cities like Cartagena, and with this precious metal and the work of skilled artisans from Spain came beautifully crafted artifacts. Since then, the town has become famous for its incredible filigree jewellery, which we will learn more about during our guided tour. We will take a stroll through this storied town beginning with a tuk-tuk ride from Plaza de San Francisco, visiting key landmarks. We will also visit a filigree workshop witnessing the intricate jewellery artistry that defines Mompox’s renowned craftsmanship. With stunning colonial churches, breathtaking nature surrounding the town, and delicious local delights such as capa cheese and butifarra, Mompox is sure to be one of the highlights of our journey along the magnificent Magdalena River. Also today, we will journey through the beautiful wetlands surrounding Mompox, exploring the massive lake that is home to a variety of flora and fauna native to the region, with opportunities to birdwatch at sunrise, early morning and sunset. (B, L, D)

Day 7 Mompox to Santa Barbara de Pinto.

Today we embark on a private excursion boat to visit Santa Barbara de Pinto, a typical Magdalena riverside village. Our guided tour of the town will include learning the traditional craft of fishing net weaving and watching skilled artisans hand roll tobacco. We will also visit a historic church and have some time to shop for intricate handmade wares crafted by local townspeople while delighting in the pastel-toned Spanish architecture throughout the town. For those who prefer a more active adventure, exploring the natural beauty surrounding this riverside town there will be a guided hike through the lush landscape. Later in the day, local families will join us on board from El Banco who are keepers of La Cumbia – the soul of Colombian music and the heart of this region. There will be the opportunity to experience this cultural treasure firsthand, with authentic music, stories and celebration. (B, L, D)

Day 8 Calamar to Mahates (Palenque).

This morning, board a paola (a bicycle taxi for two) for a historic tour of Calamar, starting with a scenic ride along the Malecon to the House of Culture. Later relax on board as we cruise to Mahates, gateway to the town of Palenque, the first ‘free town’ in the Americas. Founded by those who fled a life of slavery during colonial times, the spirit and appearance of the town has been preserved through time. In 1713, the Spanish crown issued a Royal Decree that officially freed the people of Palenque from slavery. Immerse yourself in the town’s deeply rooted culture and traditions, from symbolic hairstyles to ancestral medicine, which are so distinct that UNESCO declared Palenque to be a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. We will also visit a local home during our tour. An important piece of Palenque’s heritage is the music and rhythmic style that was developed in the city and we will have the opportunity to enjoy a special performance that brings the town’s spirit to life. (B, L, D)

    Day 9 Cartagena.

Take the day to delight in the beautiful coastal city of Cartagena. Many Spaniards flocked to the city when they heard tales of gold found in the tombs of indigenous leaders, expanding this small port into a thriving city. We start the day with a tour of the city, where we will see iconic landmarks including the cathedral and the stone walls built to protect the city from the plundering of pirates. This afternoon, witness the incredible UNESCO-designated San Felipe Castle, the fortress that defended Cartagena from French and British attacks. We will also enjoy a tour through the breathtaking Getsemaní neighbourhood with its vibrant colours as well as the mouthwatering local delicacies. (B, L, D)

    Day 10 Cartagena to London.

Disembark this morning and transfer to the airport for your indirect scheduled flight to London. (B)

    Day 11 London.

    Arrive this afternoon.

        Day 2 Medellin.

After breakfast we will discover the heart of Medellín Antioquia on a half-day guided tour visiting the main highlights of the city. Though the city was once known for violent campaigns, Medellin has undergone impressive social transformation. We will begin with a ride on the Medellin Metro, considered one of the best 10 transport systems of the world. The metro will lead us to the enchanting Botero Square where 23 voluptuous bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero are displayed. Our city tour will also include visits to the Antioquia Museum and Parques del Rio. Return to the hotel this afternoon with the remainder of the day at leisure. (B)

        Day 3 Medellin.

A significant volume of Colombia’s coffee production comes from the ‘Coffee region’ however, other parts of the country have also excelled at the production of this humble little bean. The rolling mountainous hills of Antioquia with its fertile soil and ideal climate makes it the perfect location for the cultivation and production of coffee. Today we will visit Hacienda Corazon De Leon to learn about the coffee production, the full lifecycle of planting and seeding through cultivation and harvest. There will also be an opportunity to taste the delicious coffee at the end of the tour. Afterwards we enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before we return to the hotel for some time at leisure. This evening join your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner. (B, L, D*)
