Sam Hood

Birding and the natural world have been Sam’s main passions from an early age. With a wealth of fantastic sites to go birding on his doorstep growing up, birds became the focal point of this enduring passion. Whether onboard as a guide or at home he will rarely be found far away from a pair of binoculars or a telephoto lens!

Sam’s interests led to him studying Countryside Management and working for conservation organisations in the UK including the National Trust for Scotland, National Trust and Historic Environment Scotland. The latter leading to him working for several years as the custodian of a ruined castle (and happily monitoring the Peregrine Falcons inside!) in the South-west of Scotland. Sam has also spent much time surveying wildlife, from bat roosts in housing estates through to surveying seabirds on the outer fringes of the British Isles. The last 5 years have been spent working onboard expedition cruise vessels around the world, with particular favourite destinations being the polar regions, the British Isles and the South Pacific.

Sam now splits his time off between the North-east of England and Northern Norway where he can be found out birding but often also indulging in his other favourite interests, photography and polar history books.
