Colin Souness
Born on the rugged and beautiful west coast of Scotland, Colin grew up with a love of mountains and waterways, and a draw towards wild spaces that has lasted a lifetime. Being ever pulled towards those parts of the globe less populated by humans, Colin studied glaciology at university as an excuse to visit the world’s highest and iciest places. He completed his undergraduate degree at Edinburgh University and later his Masters and PhD in Aberystwyth, on the Irish Sea coast of wild West Wales. Since that time, he has walked in the footsteps of glaciers, making a career in the Polar Regions that has spanned more than a decade and has taken him to all corners of the Arctic, both geographic poles, and has seen him living ‘deep field’ for extended periods in both West and East Antarctica. Also, being a qualified commercial helicopter pilot, Colin has had rewarding involvement in Polar aviation, helping to set up helicopter-enabled projects in southern Greenland and in the Antarctic.
Colin Spends most of his down time in South Africa with his Capetonian wife Nicky and their Border Collie Jazz. He loves old Land Rovers, riding motorcycles, Scottish hill walking, and keenly awaits the next rugby World Cup.
