The Swedish Education Fund for Liberia

The Noble Caledonia Charitable Trust are delighted to be working with the Swedish Education Fund for Liberia (SEFL), a charitable organisation focused on furthering education in Lofa County. With the help of a strong local network, built through years of collaboration, and high village contributions, SEFL has built / renovated over 30 school buildings in the rural, hard to reach areas of Lofa, fixed water wells with pumps in over 15 locations, electrified schools, sponsored night schools & scholarships.

In 2025, SEFL launched a new initiative focused specifically on addressing barriers to girls’ education in Liberia. Girls in Liberia have worse educational opportunities than boys, which negatively affects their future prospects. Reasons for this include teenage pregnancies which often means that girls leave school to take care of the child and menstruation-related barriers as the lack of menstrual protection and stigma around menstruation lead to high absence-rates among girls in school.

SEFL’s goal is to empower girls’ futures through education and health and seek to achieve this by providing girls in Lofa County with access to knowledge about sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) to enable informed decisions; access to menstrual protection to ensure that girls can attend school without interruption and access to contraceptives. Education improves girls' quality of life and through longer schooling, independence is boosted, which leads to better opportunities and reduced dependence on men or family. In addition, girls can actively contribute to the economy of the household and the country.
