Training the Next Generation of Marine Protectors
In partnership with Manta Trust
The Noble Caledonia Charitable Trust (NCCT) is proud to support Manta Trust’s efforts to empower local communities in the Maldives to lead marine conservation from within.
With MS Hebridean Sky returning to the Maldives for the first time since 2016, this partnership highlights an inspiring initiative focused on education, opportunity, and long-term ocean stewardship.

Bridging the Conservation Gap
Much of the Maldives’ marine conservation work has traditionally been centred around luxury resorts, where funding supports research and environmental initiatives.
However, this leaves many remote atolls — which make up the majority of the country — underrepresented and understudied, with local communities often excluded from meaningful participation.
The RahVeshi Programme
The RahVeshi Programme, developed by Manta Trust and the Maldives Manta Conservation Programme, is designed to address this imbalance by empowering local people to take the lead in conservation.
Through this initiative, young Maldivians are trained in manta and devil ray research across remote atolls including Makunudhoo, Fuvahmulah, and Addu.
Participants gain hands-on experience in photo identification, drone and snorkel surveys, and data analysis — building both scientific understanding and practical field skills.
Creating Opportunities
Beyond conservation, the programme opens pathways to meaningful employment and leadership. Trainees are equipped to pursue careers in marine science, contribute to local conservation initiatives, and support sustainable ecotourism.
By investing in people, RahVeshi ensures that those closest to these ecosystems are empowered to protect and manage them for the future.
Building a Sustainable Future
Contributions to the Manta Trust Fund directly support the training and development of these young conservation leaders.
This approach creates lasting impact — safeguarding manta and devil ray populations while strengthening the resilience and prosperity of coastal communities.
“Together, we can ensure that the people closest to these marine ecosystems are at the forefront of protecting them.”
