Building a Future for Bornean Orangutans

In 2026 the Island Sky returns to Borneo and NCCT has reconnected with old friends at Orangutan Foundation International Australia (OFIA), supporting the rescue, rehabilitation and release of displaced Bornean orangutans.
OFI is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of displaced Bornean orangutans while safeguarding their precious forest habitat. Every orangutan receives veterinary care before entering a tailored rehabilitation programme where young animals learn climbing, nest-building and foraging while adults recover from the effects of human interaction.
Preparing Orangutans for Life in the Wild
The journey to release is crucial. Traditional cages cannot recreate the rainforest environment needed to prepare orangutans for freedom.
To overcome this, OFI developed large forest enclosures known as Haha's. These protected one to three hectare habitats allow orangutans to climb, build nests and forage naturally until they consistently sleep in treetop nests and are considered ready for release.
Building More Haha Enclosures
Five Haha enclosures have already been completed, with plans for more. Each hectare costs approximately AU$120,000 to build.
