The long sunny days of a Baltic summer are legendary and the perfect time to witness the spectacle of colour and joy that the sun brings to this northern world which, bordered by diverse kingdoms and republics in a relatively contained area, is ideally suited to exploration by ship. Whether it be the fascinating Baltic states and their capitals such as Riga and Tallinn with their marvellously untouched Medieval quarters or the sheer delight of small Scandinavian ports with their unique architecture, the region offers a real cornucopia of delights.
With the MS Hebridean Sky, we can discover some islands and ports which are inaccessible to the larger cruise ships in the region including the marvellously untouched Medieval town of Visby on the island of Gotland, the Estonian island of Saaremaa, a gem with its Medieval Episcopal castle and timeless countryside and picturesque Mariehamn in Finland with its strong seafaring traditions. Ilya Vinitsky is Professor of Russian literature in the Slavic Department at Princeton University. His main fields of expertise are Russian Romanticism and Realism, the history of emotions, and nineteenth century intellectual and spiritual history. In 2019 Vinitsky received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his project of a comprehensive study of political and literary activities of Ivan Narodny (Jaan Siboul), a Russian-Estonian expat writer, art critic, and con-man, who lived in America from 1906 until his death in 1953 and was labeled by FBI as “the worst fraud that ever came out of Russia”. His most recent book on translation as provocation has been published in Moscow in January 2022.
Ambassador Steven Pifer is an affiliate at Stanford’s Centre for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) and a nonresident senior fellow with the Brookings Institution. His 27 years as a career Foreign Service officer focused on nuclear arms control, the Soviet Union (later Ukraine and Russia) and European security. His assignments included deputy assistant secretary of state with responsibilities for Russia and Ukraine, U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, and special assistant to the president and senior director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia on the National Security Council. He also served on the NATO and Soviet desks at the State Department and at the U.S. embassies in Warsaw and Moscow during Soviet times. He was at the embassy in London when the Soviet Union collapsed (among other things, freeing the Baltic states) and Europe’s post-Cold War transformation began, before returning to Washington to work on the post-Soviet space. Ambassador Pifer looks forward to traveling to the Baltic region, visiting five countries that now find themselves preoccupied with security questions made more intense by Russia’s war on Ukraine and discussing the security challenges there and more broadly.
The MS Hebridean Sky is one of our two flag ships and sister vessel to the MS Island Sky. Both vessels were built in the same ship yard in Italy at similar times and share the same excellent attributes that make them two of the finest small ships in the world.
Fly by scheduled flight. Arrive this afternoon and transfer to the MS Hebridean Sky. Sail this evening.
Today we visit this once important Hanseatic port on the island of Gotland. Best explored on foot, the beautifully preserved Medieval town snuggles inside 13th century walls, housing 44 watchtowers. In Viking times and several centuries after, the Swedish island of Gotland and especially the city of Visby, became a centre of trade in the Baltic Sea and is a World Heritage Site. Walk its streets from the Middle Ages and see the Medieval city walls and gardens ablaze with flowers, earning the city its nickname ‘the city of ruins and roses’. Sail in the late afternoon.
Founded in 1252 by the Teutonic Knights of East Prussia, Klaipeda was annexed by Hitler in 1939 and almost destroyed towards the end of World War II. Explore the old town of Klaipeda including a stop in Theatre Square before strolling along the atmospheric narrow streets where in the past craftsmen such as shoemakers, blacksmiths and bakers used to live and work. Continue towards the resort town Palanga where, after a walk through the Botanical park, we arrive at a 19th century Neo-Renaissance style mansion which houses the largest Amber Museum in the Baltics. Here we will learn all about “Baltic gold” before returning to Klaipeda where a Lithuanian diplomat will join us to share thoughts and insights on current affairs.
Spend the afternoon in Latvia’s capital city. Founded in the 13th century, Riga became one of the most successful trading cities of the Baltic. Explore the Old Town with its Medieval streets lined with Hanseatic warehouses and punctuated with Gothic and Baroque churches including St Peter Cathedral, the largest Medieval church in the Baltic. Also enjoy a private folkloric performance before some time to explore independently.
After a morning at sea we arrive at Estonia’s largest island which offers a glimpse of a bygone age. Untouched by industry, it is a green and very pleasant island dotted with attractive villages in a rolling forested landscape. An island drive will take you back in time through a countryside of stone walls, thatched roofs, traditional villages and windmills before we end at the lovely capital Kuressaare with its magnificent Medieval castle. We will stroll through the streets of the enchanting old town before returning to the ship.
Spend the day in the historic maritime city of Tallinn with her awe-inspiring city walls and fortifications, narrow Medieval streets and the gateways which remain remarkably well preserved. In the Upper Town we will enjoy the views from Dome Hill with the extraordinary vista of domes, spires and gables and see Toompea Castle, once a fortress, and now the seat of the Estonian parliament. Walking to the Lower Old Town we will visit the main square where we will find the oldest pharmacy in Europe, the Gothic Cathedral and the 15th century Town Hall. There will be free time to explore further at your own pace this afternoon.
Arriving in Helsinki over breakfast, a morning city tour will take us to the colourful Market Square, the President’s Palace and the impressive architecture of Senate Square including the Lutheran Cathedral of Finland and Uspenski Cathedral. We continue to the Sibelius Monument and the impressive Temppeliaukio, the church in the rock. The afternoon is free to explore further at your own pace.
This morning we sail through some of the 6700 islands of the Aland archipelago and into the attractive town of Mariehamn. Choose from an island tour where we will head into the beautiful countryside along scenic roads before stopping at a distillery for a tasting of local spirits. Alternatively a walking tour will explore the town. This afternoon is free to explore further and maybe visit the Aland Maritime Museum with its exhibits of model ships as well as highlighting the region’s shipbuilding history.
Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for our scheduled flight to London.
