Cities & Rivers of Canada & New England
A voyage from Toronto to Boston discovering the St Lawrence River & Nova Scotia aboard the Hanseatic Inspiration
- 16 October 2021
Here is a fascinating voyage from Toronto to Boston which offers a combination of sophisticated cities and towns with the great Canadian outdoors. We will see some stunning scenery and enjoy the interesting blend of cultures for which Eastern Canada is famous. For this expedition we are delighted that we have been able to secure some cabins from our associates at Hapag-Lloyd Cruises aboard the five-star Hanseatic Inspiration, a vessel on which you can be assured of excellent service, food and sumptuous surroundings.
Before embarking the Hanseatic Inspiration, we have an overnight stay in the vibrant and dynamic city of Toronto and once on board our exploration begins with a relaxing day sailing on Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes of North America before we continue northwards to the St Lawrence River. Amongst the many scenic highlights of our voyage will be the Saguenay Fjord National Park and the beautiful island of Iles de la Madeleine. We will experience the unique cultural heritage of the region during our time in Montreal, Quebec and Halifax. There will be a range of optional excursions on offer in each port of call as well as ample time to relax on board whilst cruising through some stunning scenery and hopefully spotting some of the astounding marine life of the region.

Day 1 London to Toronto, Canada.
Fly by scheduled flight. On arrival transfer to our hotel for an overnight stay. The remainder of the day is at leisure until we meet for dinner this evening.
Day 2 Toronto.
This morning we depart from the hotel for our tour to Niagara Falls. After our visit, we will have a leisurely lunch before we set off to the Port of Toronto Cruise Ship Terminal. On arrival, transfer to the Hanseatic Inspiration and sail this evening.
Day 3 Lake Ontario.
We spend today sailing on one of the five Great Lakes of North America. Cruising through the Thousand Islands and the beginning of the St Lawrence River, we will fully experience the dense forestation and natural beauty of the area. Our subsequent passage through the seven locks is a nautical masterpiece that only a select few ships can manage.
Day 4 Montreal.
Our day begins in the world’s second-largest French-speaking city, with a choice of optional excursions available. Take a city tour through Montreal and discover its European charm with picturesque town houses and towering skyscrapers, or perhaps fully explore the districts of this charming city by electric scooter.
Day 5 Quebec & St Lawrence River.
We spend a full day in Quebec, where we can explore the old town with its many steps, and experience the blend of French and Canadian culture. There is a choice of optional excursions. Enjoy a city walk with tea at the historic Chateau Frontenac or join a trip to Montmorency Falls and Ile d’Orleans - at around 80 metres high, this is one of North America’s most important pilgrimage sites, with truly outstanding sights to behold. Later in the day, we sail on the St Lawrence River, and with some luck will be able to spot some whales.
Day 6 Saguenay Fjord National Park.
The wildlife spotting continues today as, at the mouth of the Saguenay River, you can often see beluga whales hunting the fish and plankton that are in plentiful supply in the beautiful Saguenay Fjord National Park. The wonderful panoramas make our cruise on the Saguenay Fjord an unforgettable part of this trip.
Day 7 Cruise on the St Lawrence River.
Enjoy a full day of sailing on the river, with the opportunity to join one of the lectures on board, spend some time wildlife spotting from the deck or relax and enjoy the facilities on board.
Day 8 Gaspe.
For any bird enthusiasts, this area will be of particular interest as the rugged coast is a haven for northern gannets and auks which nest here. An American school bus will be utilised to take you to the pretty fishing village of Perce for an optional boat trip to Bonaventure Island. Alternatively, you can explore the forests with a hike in Forillon National Park. Please note that today we will be at anchor and the ship’s Zodiacs or local tender boats will be used.
Day 9 Iles de la Madeleine.
Enjoy a relaxing morning at sea and arrive at Cap aux Meules, part of the Iles de la Madeleine archipelago. Here, spectacular red sandstone cliffs jut out of the sea on the northern coasts of the 12 main islands. Sand dunes creating lagoons, adjacent wetlands, and miles of windswept beaches link most islands. During the optional afternoon tour we explore the island of Iles de la Madeleine with its breathtaking views of the Cap Alright Lighthouse. Please note that today we will be at anchor and the ship’s Zodiacs or local tender boats will be used.
Day 10 Baddeck, Nova Scotia.
Today there will be an optional full day excursion through the dramatic scenery of Cape Breton Island. Visit the village of Baddeck, the home of Cape Breton’s most famous resident, Alexander Graham Bell. Enjoy free time to wander the charming streets, visit the quaint shops and heritage buildings. Alternatively, relax and enjoy an entertaining sail on the deck of a boat unique on all of the d'Or Lakes. During your hour-and-a-half cruise on this traditional 67-foot sailing boat, you may be lucky enough to observe the majestic bald eagles circling overhead, and see Alexander Graham Bell's mansion Beinn Bhreagh from the lake as well as the beautiful Baddeck shoreline.
Day 11 At Sea.
Enjoy a day at sea as we cruise towards Halifax. Join one of the lectures or relax and enjoy the facilities on board.
Day 12 Halifax.
From our berth in Halifax, there will be an optional scenic tour to Lunenberg, where impressive cultural treasures will tell the story of the German settlers. The settlement and its colourful, 18th century wooden houses are now protected by UNESCO World Heritage Status. Alternatively, during an optional excursion to Peggy’s Cove and the Titanic, we visit an old fishing port with plenty of history, before then investigating the tragic sinking of one of the world’s most famous ocean liners.
Day 13 Sea.
Enjoy a day at sea as we cruise towards St John, New Brunswick. Join one of the lectures or relax and enjoy the facilities on board.
Day 14 St John, New Brunswick.
St John is a wonderful blend of big-city flair and small-town idylls, with both nature and technology, history and modernity combined. There will be an opportunity to visit the Reversing Falls, a unique natural display of tidal power. There is an abundance of natural beauty and the fauna of the marine ecosystem in the salt marshes, which you can discover on a walking excursion in Irving Nature Park.
