Opera in Vienna

A four night stay in Vienna including two performances at the Vienna State Opera.

  • 23 March 2020

  • Belvedere Palace

Due to the continued popularity of our opera programmes, we are delighted to introduce a new four night stay in Vienna inclusive of two opera performances at the magnificent Vienna Opera House, one of the leading opera houses in the world. Often considered as the ‘capital of classical music’ due to the number of famous composers who resided in the city during the 19th century, our visit to Austria will include a guided tour focusing on those who flocked to the city to establish themselves in the Viennese musical scene including of course, Mozart and Beethoven. We will be based at the charming Steigenberger Hotel Herrenof ideally located in the centre of Vienna and only a short stroll from the Opera House. In addition to the musical elements of our stay, we will also enjoy a guided tour of the city and an excursion to the beautiful forests known as the Vienna Woods.

  • Vienna Opera House
  • St Stephen's Cathedral
  • Belvedere Palace

Day 1 London to Vienna, Austria.

Fly by scheduled flight. Arrive this afternoon and transfer to the Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof for a four night stay. Settle into your room before meeting for dinner at the hotel this evening. (D)

Day 2 Vienna.

A morning city tour of Austria’s elegant capital will start with a panoramic tour enjoying the spectacular buildings of the world-famous Ringstrasse – seeing the Opera House, Art History Museum, Parliament, City Hall, National Theatre and University, all built on what used to be the city walls. We will also visit the gardens of the Belvedere Palace for a wonderful view over the city before returning to the city centre for our walking tour of the Old City. Starting with the winter residence of the Habsburg Dynasty, the Hofburg, and then the splendid Heroe’s Square, we continue along the Graben, the former moat which surrounded the Old City, and end with a visit to the Cathedral of St Stephan, the symbol of Vienna. After lunch in a local restaurant the remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. We will meet in the early evening for a light buffet followed by an evening at the Vienna State Opera House with a performance of Donizetti’s ‘L’Elisir d’Amore’. (B, L, D*)

L’Elisir d’Amore by Gaetano Donizetti: Penniless Nemorino is in love with wealthy Adina. In a bid to increase his chances, he buys a ‘love elixir’ (in reality, Bordeaux wine) from the wonder doctor Dulcamara. His appeal is, however, increased by something else: an unexpected inheritance. Yet, with or without elixir, wine and inheritance, it seems that Adina loves Nemorino anyway.

Day 3 Vienna.

Following a morning at leisure we will meet for an afternoon walking tour discovering the lives of some of the world’s most famous composers. Walking from our hotel, visit the former site of the Stadttheatre where Mozart often played when he first arrived in Vienna from Salzburg. Walk the streets where Haydn lived as a youth, and continue to Petersgasse where Mozart lodged with the Weber family and met his future wife, Constance. See Figaro House, where Mozart wrote the opera of the same name.  We will pass some of the apartments where Beethoven lived before falling out with his landlady – a regular occurrence – and then stop at the Café Frauenhuber, where both Mozart and Beethoven played and where we will have a refreshment before continuing to see the Musikverein, home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and known to the whole world as the venue of the famous New Year’s Day concert of music by the Strauss family. This evening we will meet for a light meal and aperitif before enjoying an evening at the Vienna State Opera House with a performance of Rossini’s ‘Le Cerenterola’. (B, D*)

La Cenerentola by Gioachino Rossini: La Cenerentola is based largely on the famous story of Cinderella, above all the version by Charles Perrault. For many people, although La Cenerentola was written in very little time, it is the most poetic of all comic Rossini operas. Sven-Eric Bechtolf, director of the current production, has transferred the action to 1950s Italy, or more precisely to a tiny fictitious nation on the Mediterranean called San Sogno, ruled by the slightly eccentric young prince Don Ramiro, who collects expensive cars.

Day 4 Vienna.

After breakfast leave the city and drive towards the beautiful forested highland region known as the Vienna Woods. Visit the delightful Cistercian Monastery of Heiligenkreuz (Holy Cross) for a guided tour and then drive through the woods to Mayerling to see the hunting lodge where Crown Prince Rudolf committed suicide with his commoner lover, Maria Vetsera. Finally drive through the lovely Helenental (Helen’s Valley), which was the inspiration for Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, before enjoying lunch in the charming market town of Mödling, made famous by Beethoven’s Mödlinger Tänze. Return to Vienna for an afternoon at leisure and enjoy a farewell dinner this evening in a local restaurant. (B, L, D)

Day 5 Vienna to London.

After breakfast transfer to the airport for our return scheduled flight to London. (B)
