Day 1 London to Milan, Italy.

Fly by scheduled flight. Arrive this afternoon and transfer to the Sina de la Ville hotel for a four night stay. Settle into your room before meeting for dinner at the hotel this evening. (D)

Day 2 Castello Sforzesco & Pinaconteca di Brera.

Following breakfast at the hotel enjoy a walking tour to two of the city’s highlights, Castello Sforzesco and the Pinacoteca di Brera. Originally built as a fortress in the 14th century, the iconic brick-red Castello Sforzesco became home to the powerful Sforza dynasty who ruled Renaissance Milan and oversaw the reconstruction of the building which had been seriously damaged between 1447 and 1450. The castle’s defences, designed by Leonardo da Vinci, were largely demolished during the period of Napoleonic rule, and the complex was transferred to civic use following the unification of Italy in the 19th century. A short walk brings us to the impressive Pinacoteca di Brera, home to over 400 works dating from the 14th to the 20th centuries by master painters such as Piero della Francesca, Raphael, and Caravaggio. Lunch will be taken in a local restaurant, with the rest of the afternoon left free for independent exploration. Meet in the early evening for an aperitif and snacks at the city’s famous Pavarotti Restaurant, before walking the short distance to the Teatro alla Scala for an opera performance of Charles Gounod’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’. (B, L, D*)

‘Romeo and Juliet’ is a masterpiece of the French composer Charles Gounod. This opera is a grand and sweeping retelling of Shakespeare's story, one of the best and most tragic love stories of all time. Two families in Verona, the Capulets and the Montagues, are bitter enemies. Conflict ensues when Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love. The two young lovers exchange secret vows, but within hours a fight has broken out between the two families, once again. Romeo's friend, Mercutio, is killed by Count Capulet's nephew, Tybalt. Despite his newfound alliance with the Capulets, Romeo, distraught over the loss of his friend, fights Tybalt and murders him. As a result, Romeo is forced into exile. Forced by her father to marry Paris when she is already secretly married to Romeo, Juliet takes a potion that will make her appear dead so as to fool her family. Tragically, Romeo, who is unable to receive a message from the Friar relaying this information, thinks she is in fact dead and kills himself before discovering the truth.

Day 3 Cremona.

Following breakfast at the hotel we will drive to Cremona, a city rich in Medieval architecture and famous for its violin-making traditions which were added to the UNESCO list in 2012. Visit the impressive Violin Museum which takes visitors through Cremona's five-century history of violin making, introducing them to the great masters and their violins, including the famous Antonio Stradivari. Explore Cremona’s beautiful historic centre, including the Piazza Stradivari, the Piazza del Comune, Cathedral and the Torrazzo which at 112 metres is the tallest brick belfry in the world. Visit a modern violin-making workshop where a master luthier demonstrates all the stages in the construction of a violin in the classic Cremona method. Following a local lunch we will return to Milan for an afternoon at leisure. Enjoy dinner at the hotel this evening. (B, L, D)

Day 4 Milan.

This morning we will meet for a walking tour to discover more of this fascinating city. Walk through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, designed in the 19th century and now home to a huge array of upscale shops and restaurants. Visit the cathedral, which at 157 metres long is one of the largest Catholic churches in the world. Construction began in 1386 and took five centuries to complete. We will also visit the cathedral’s huge rooftop terrace, which affords spectacular views of the city and the cathedral’s roof sculptures. Continue on to the nearby Palazzo Reale, a vast neoclassical palace whose 600 year history has seen the building badly damaged by fires and extensive bombings during World War Two. After extensive restorations, Palazzo Reale is now a museum, hosting some of Milan’s biggest art exhibitions. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure before we meet this evening and visit the iconic Salvetti Restaurant in the Galleria for an aperitif and a light buffet before enjoying an evening of opera at La Scala with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Il Trovatore’ (B, D*)

‘Il Trovatore’ is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto largely written by Salvadore Cammarano. The Count di Luna loves Leonora, but she loves Manrico, the Count’s military enemy. Manrico’s mother Azucena tells him how her mother was burnt to death for supposed witchcraft against the Count’s baby brother. Azucena intended to throw the baby onto the fire – but blinded by revenge she lost her own child to the flames. The Count captures Manrico and Azucena. Leonora promises herself to him if he will give them their freedom, but secretly takes poison. Leonora dies in Manrico’s arms. The Count has Manrico executed. Azucena reveals that her mother is finally avenged, the Count has murdered his own brother.
