New Year in Venice

A four night escorted tour to Venice staying at the Duodo Palace Hotel

  • 30 December 2019
  • History and Culture
  • Grand Canal

Venice is unique, amazingly beautiful and casts its spell over all those who visit. It is a wonderful place, no matter when you visit and especially atmospheric over the festive period. The first sight of the Grand Canal from the water affects the emotions like nowhere else. No matter how many times you visit Venice, that first glimpse of every trip is something special.

Stand on the Rialto Bridge and look down the Grand Canal as the low sunlight reflects off the subtle, coloured palaces or on the waterfront looking across to the enchanting Santa Maria della Salute, bathed in a watery winter’s light. Such moments are what makes Venice so very special. Added to this, the atmosphere at this time of the year is relaxed and peaceful. The Venetians have reclaimed their city from the vast numbers of tourists and day visitors which invade during the summer months so walks can be enjoyed, churches and galleries visited, without the pressure of the crowds.

Our tour over New Year offers you an opportunity to discover Venice for the first time, or to rediscover a city previously visited. Included in the tour is a ticket for an afternoon concert on New Year’s Eve at the delightful Teatro alla Fenice and a performance of La Traviata at the impressive Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto where each act is performed in a different room. We hope you can join us on this exclusive tour which is limited to just 25 guests to see in the New Year in La Serenissima.

Itinerary

  • Santa Maria della Salute Church
  • Rialto Bridge
  • Burano

Day 1 London to Venice, Italy.

Fly by scheduled flight. Arrive this afternoon and transfer to the Duodo Palace Hotel for four-night stay. Settle into your room before meeting for dinner in a local restaurant this evening. (D)

Day 2 Venice.

Enjoy a morning at leisure to explore this most atmospheric of cities. Perhaps take in the wonders of the Accademia or cross the Grand Canal to the modern exhibits in the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Walk across the Rialto Bridge, visit the market or explore the shops in the warren of lanes that radiate from St Mark’s Square. This afternoon we will meet for a very special experience, a New Year’s Eve concert at the Teatro all Fenice. The orchestral first part will feature Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.4 in A major, whilst the second features soloists and the choir and includes ‘Va, pensiero’ from Verdi’s Nabucco. Meet tonight for dinner at the Antico Martini restaurant, facing the Teatro alla Fenice. (B, D)

Day 3 San Marco and Castello.

Following another relaxed morning, meet for an afternoon walking tour to the most significant musical venues in the city. A short walk from the hotel brings us to the Marciana Chapel, home to the famous choir of the Basilica of San Marco. We continue on to the Church of the Pietà, a former convent and orphanage for girls and an authentic masterpiece of the 18th century by Giorgio Massari. The young orphans that stayed here were encouraged to study music and their most famous teacher was Antonio Vivaldi, hired in 1703 as a violin and viola teacher as well as a choirmaster. We will also see the Church of San Giovanni in Bragora, where Vivaldi was christened, and the beautiful Baroque Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti, where he conducted the choir for many years. Meet tonight for dinner at a local restaurant. (B, D)

Day 4 Murano & Burano.

Today enjoy a half day tour by private motor launch visiting two of the most beautiful islands of the lagoon where we will explore fascinating aspects of Venice that are quickly disappearing: the handicrafts of the glassblowers and lace makers. We will pass many of the 40 picturesque islands that surround the Venetian Lagoon visiting Murano, renowned since 1291 for its glass manufacture and where we will witness masters of this delicate craft at work during a visit to a leading factory. Continue to Burano, a tiny island dotted with brightly painted houses. Its fame is due to traditional lace making, an art still practiced by many of the local women. Following dinner this evening, a short walk brings us to the Musica a Palazzo Palace where we will enjoy a performance of Verdi’s La Traviata. Each act is performed in a different room of one of the most noble and fascinating palaces in Venice, the Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto. (B, D)

Day 5 Venice to London.

After breakfast transfer to the airport for our scheduled flight to London.

  • La Fenice
