JOURNEY TO THE LEVANT
In the wake of ‘Pilgrims in Arms’ - A journey from Istanbul to the Levant with Canon Dr Anne Davison & Dr Michael Scott aboard the MS Island Sky
10 nights from £3095
The story begins in Constantinople in the year 1095. The Byzantine Empire has lost much of its territory to the hands of Seljuk Turks, warrior-horsemen from the east. These invaders have also taken control of most of the Middle East, conquering Bagdad and seizing Palestine and Jerusalem from Egypt. But now the Byzantine Emperor is planning to recover his territory. He needs help, so he sends a message to the Pope, asking for some Knights to come as mercenaries. The Pope in turn dramatises the plight of Jerusalem, and guarantees that everyone who goes to the rescue of the Holy City will have their sins forgiven and be assured of a place in heaven. And so began ‘The Crusades’. Tens of thousands respond throughout Europe, firstly in an unruly way, but these are followed by official forces who descend on Constantinople and, once across the Bosphorus, begin their long walk to Jerusalem. Whether you are interested in ancient history, the Crusades or more modern times, this journey will have something of interest for you. A journey along the Turquoise Coast is a treat at anytime, but in early autumn it is particularly special. The temperatures are cooling making it perfect for our explorations ashore and in many places we will have the sites to ourselves.
