After learning that his father worked for Jacques-Yves Cousteau aboard the famous ship Calypso, Swedish-born Martin Enckell insisted on learning to dive right away. His training started at the age of 12 with Israeli navy divers in the Red sea, and since that time he has successfully combined his love of travel with his love of nature. Martin began his career at sea 15 years ago and has been on the move since then, having stood at the Geographical North Pole 7 times, spent long over a year in the Drake Passage, 10 Austral summers in the Antarctic, and crossed the Antarctic Circle several times.
Of the 6 – 8 months each year that he spends at sea on ships, the majority is spent in the colder regions of the world such as the Artic and Antarctica. Martin has worked as a diver in many places of the world mainly on expedition ships, but he also worked for 18 months in a big dive resort in the Maldives. He has many years experience as a PADI dive instructor teaching diving and as a HSE safety diver. Whenever he can, he also works as a safety diver within the UK film industry during the filming of commercials and movies, such as the Harry Potter series.
Martin works as Expedition Leader, Zodiac Driver and Dive Master. Based for 18 months in the Maldives, but wanting to specialize in the colder waters of the world, Martin and his brother started the Quark Expeditions Antarctic Dive Program, successfully guiding diving excursions in the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands for 4 years. Safety was always a top priority and Martin worked as safety diver on the movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Although he has covered both Poles, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, through to the West Indies and the South Pacific, in recent years, most of his time has been spent in the Polar Regions. Antarctica and the Arctic, together with Svalbard and Greenland, will always remain favorites, but Aldabra in the outer Seychelles, Africa and Madagascar continue to pull Martin to the Indian Ocean year after year.
