Sir Michael Burton
Michael Burton had a 37 year long career in the Diplomatic Service, and played a prominent part in the closing stages of the Cold War. As the last British Minister in Berlin during the final four years of Allied Occupation, he remained as the senior British diplomat after the fall of the Berlin Wall during the run-up to German Re-unification a year later. During the following two years he was responsible for forging links with the former lands of East Germany as they went through the process of integration into the Federal Republic. After returning to the Foreign Office as the Assistant Under- Secretary for the Middle East and North Africa, Michaelís final posting was as ambassador in Prague.
Since retirement he has been a member of Council of the Royal Society of Asian Affairs, and Chairman of the European-Atlantic Group, the British Czech and Slovak Association and the Hurlingham Club in London.
